ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro both cost $20 a month, but only Claude has a yearly plan. Compare features, limits, coding tools and which suits your work.

ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro both cost $20 a month in the US, checked on 19 October 2026. The difference is in the year: Claude Pro has a yearly plan at $200, while OpenAI says it does not offer yearly billing for Plus, so a year of ChatGPT Plus costs $240.

Beyond price, the choice comes down to what you use AI for. ChatGPT Plus includes image generation and a wider set of everyday tools. Claude Pro reads much longer documents in one go and includes Claude Code for programming. This guide compares both on cost, limits and features, without pretending one is better for everyone.

Price comparison at a glance

Cost (US, before tax) ChatGPT Plus Claude Pro
Monthly$20$20
Yearly optionNone$200 paid up front
Cost of 12 months$240$200 yearly, or $240 monthly

If you keep either plan all year, Claude Pro on yearly billing saves $40 compared with ChatGPT Plus. If you only subscribe for a few busy months, the monthly price is identical, and the decision is purely about features.

Both companies change models and features often, so check the current plan pages before paying. The structure above is what matters for most buyers: ChatGPT bundles more media tools, while Claude puts its weight on long text and code.

Both plans cost the same each month; ChatGPT Plus adds image generation, while Claude Pro handles longer documents and offers yearly billing.

Which one fits how you work?

  • You want images as well as text: ChatGPT Plus, because image generation is part of the plan.
  • You work with long reports, contracts or big codebases: Claude Pro. A context window of up to 1 million tokens means far more fits into one conversation than ChatGPT Plus's roughly 256,000.
  • You write code every day: both include a coding agent. Claude Code is included in Pro but uses the same allowance as your chats; heavy users often move to Max. See our Claude Pro price guide for when that happens.
  • You want the lowest paid price: ChatGPT Go costs less than Plus in most regions. Claude has no plan between Free and Pro.
  • You will keep it all year: Claude Pro yearly at $200 is the cheaper of the two.

A worked example: one year, two plans

Many people who rely on AI for work end up paying for both. Here is what a year costs in each combination:

Setup Cost for 12 months
ChatGPT Plus only12 × $20 = $240
Claude Pro only, yearly$200
Both, Claude on yearly billing$240 + $200 = $440
Both, but alternating: 6 months of each6 × $20 + 6 × $20 = $240

Paying for both doubles the cost for overlapping features. If you find yourself switching between them, try keeping one paid plan and using the other's free tier for a month before paying twice.

Free plans first

Both have free plans that cover light use. ChatGPT Free offers unlimited everyday text chats within abuse limits, with tighter caps on uploads, images and advanced models. Claude Free covers everyday questions with a smaller allowance and no Claude Code. Use the free versions on your real tasks for a week. If you never hit the limits, you don't need either paid plan.

Pick by the work you do most: images favour ChatGPT Plus, long documents and year-round use favour Claude Pro.

Discounts, students and cancelling

Neither company advertises a standing discount code for its $20 plan. Claude's main saving is yearly billing, and some universities provide Claude through Claude for Education; our Claude student guide explains how. For OpenAI's current promotions and student offers, see our ChatGPT Plus price and discount guide.

Both plans renew automatically. Cancel ChatGPT Plus in ChatGPT's settings and Claude Pro in Settings, then Billing, on claude.ai, or in the App Store or Google Play if you subscribed there. You normally keep access until the end of the paid period.

Verdict

For a writer, student or researcher who mostly works with text and long documents, Claude Pro is the better value, especially on yearly billing. For someone who wants one subscription that also makes images and has the widest range of everyday tools, ChatGPT Plus is the safer pick. Programmers should try both coding agents on a real project during a single paid month before committing.
