Claude Max Price in 2026: 5x vs 20x, API Credits and When It Beats Pro

Claude Max costs $100 (5x) or $200 (20x) a month. See what it adds over Pro, the new monthly API credits, and the usage maths that decides which plan to pick.
Claude Max costs $100 a month for Max 5x or $200 a month for Max 20x in the US, billed monthly only and before tax, as listed on Anthropic's pricing page on 19 October 2026. Claude Pro, the plan below it, costs $20 a month or $200 a year.
Since October 2026, both Max plans also come with monthly Claude API credits: $100 on Max 5x and $200 on Max 20x. That changes the maths for anyone who builds with the API, but the credits cannot be spent inside Claude Code or the Claude apps.
Claude plans and prices side by side (US)
| Plan | Price | Usage per 5-hour session | Billing | Monthly API credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Base level | None | No |
| Pro | $20 a month, or $200 a year | At least 5× Free | Monthly or yearly | No |
| Max 5x | $100 a month | 5× Pro | Monthly only | $100 |
| Max 20x | $200 a month | 20× Pro | Monthly only | $200 |
In euro countries, Anthropic's page shows Pro at €18 a month (€180 a year) and Max from €90 a month, also before tax. Paid plans have weekly limits on top of the 5-hour sessions, and all usage in the Claude apps and Claude Code comes from the same pool.
What Max adds on top of Pro
- More usage: 5 or 20 times Pro's allowance per 5-hour session. This is the main reason to upgrade.
- Higher output limits for long answers, documents and code.
- Priority access when Claude is busy, which Pro does not get.
- Early access to some new features.
- Claude Fable: Anthropic's plan comparison lists Fable on Max within part of the weekly limits, while on Pro it is only available through paid usage credits.
- Monthly API credits: $100 or $200 a month for the Claude API (explained below).
Everything else, including Claude Code, Projects, Research and Claude in Chrome, is already in Pro. Max is mainly about how much you can do, not what you can do.

Price per unit of usage: 5x vs 20x
Treat Pro's allowance as one unit at $20. Max 5x gives five units for $100, which is exactly the same $20 per unit, so it is no discount, just more room. Max 20x gives twenty units for $200, which works out to $10 per unit, half Pro's rate.
| Plan | Monthly price | Pro-sized units of usage | Price per unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro (monthly) | $20 | 1 | $20 |
| Max 5x | $100 | 5 | $20 |
| Max 20x | $200 | 20 | $10 |
This is a rough guide, because weekly limits also apply and usage depends on the model, the length of chats and the files involved. But it shows the shape of the choice: Max 5x is for people who simply need more, and Max 20x is the plan that gets cheaper per hour of work.
The new Max API credits, explained
Anthropic began adding monthly API credits to Max and Team plans in October 2026. They are a real extra for developers, but they come with limits worth knowing before you count them as savings.
- Amount: $100 a month on Max 5x, $200 on Max 20x.
- Works for: the Claude API, the Agent SDK, Managed Agents and the Console Playground.
- Does not work for: Claude Code, extra usage in the Claude apps, or Claude through AWS, Google Cloud or Microsoft.
- No rollover: unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle.
- New subscribers can claim them 7 days after starting Max.
- How to claim: on claude.ai, open Settings, then Billing, and link a Console organization in the API credits section.
A worked example: if you pay for Pro ($20) and also spend about $100 a month on the Claude API, you pay $120 in total. Max 5x costs $100 and includes $100 of API credits, so the same API use is covered, you pay $20 less, and you get five times Pro's chat and Claude Code usage. If you never use the API, the credits are worth nothing to you, and the decision is only about usage.
Should you upgrade from Pro to Max?
| If this sounds like you | Best choice |
|---|---|
| You chat with Claude a few times a week | Free, or Pro |
| You use Claude daily and rarely hit a limit | Pro, yearly if you will keep it all year |
| You hit Pro's limit once or twice a week | Stay on Pro and turn on usage credits for those days |
| You hit Pro's limit most days, or code with Claude Code for hours | Max 5x |
| Claude Code runs much of your working day, or Max 5x still runs out | Max 20x |
| You also pay for the Claude API every month | Max 5x or 20x, so the included credits offset that bill |
The middle row is the one most people miss. Anthropic lets paid plans turn on usage credits, billed at standard API rates, when you reach a limit. For occasional heavy days that can cost far less than the extra $80 a month for Max 5x. Check your usage in Settings, then Usage, for a couple of weeks before deciding.

Billing, downgrading and cancelling
Max is billed monthly, so you can try it for one busy month and drop back to Pro afterwards. Change or cancel in Settings, then Billing, on claude.ai. If you subscribed through the iPhone or Android app, manage it in the App Store or Google Play instead. Cancelling stops the next payment, and your plan normally stays active until the end of the paid month.
Remember that the API credits stop when you leave Max, though credits you already have stay usable until they expire.
Who should skip Max
Skip Max if your main use is writing, studying or occasional research. Pro's limits rarely get in the way of that, and many students and light users are fine on Free; see our Claude student discount guide for education options. Max is also a one-person plan: if several people need Claude, compare Anthropic's Team seats instead.
Claude Max questions
How much is Claude Max per month?
$100 for Max 5x and $200 for Max 20x in the US, before tax. Euro prices start at €90 a month.
Can I pay for Claude Max yearly?
No. Anthropic lists Max as monthly billing only. Pro is the only individual plan with a yearly option ($200 a year in the US).
Is Claude Max unlimited?
No. It gives 5 or 20 times Pro's usage per 5-hour session, with weekly limits on top. When you reach a limit you can wait, or turn on paid usage credits.
Does Claude Max include Claude Code?
Yes, as does Pro. Claude Code shares the same usage pool as your chats, so Max mainly means longer Claude Code sessions before you hit a limit.
Can I use the Max API credits in Claude Code?
No. Anthropic says the monthly credits work for the Claude API, Agent SDK, Managed Agents and Playground, but not Claude Code or extra app usage.
Is Max 20x better value than Max 5x?
Per unit of usage, yes: Max 20x costs about half as much per Pro-sized unit as Max 5x. It only saves money if you would actually use more than five times Pro's allowance.
