Claude Code comes with Claude Pro ($20) and Max ($100 or $200), or runs on pay-per-token API billing. Compare plans, API costs and tips to make your usage last.

Claude Code is included in every paid Claude plan: Pro at $20 a month ($200 a year), Max 5x at $100 and Max 20x at $200 a month in the US, as listed on Anthropic's pricing page on 19 October 2026. It is not included in the Free plan. You can also run it on pay-as-you-go API billing instead of a subscription.

On a subscription there is no separate Claude Code fee. Your coding sessions draw from the same usage allowance as your chats, so the real question is which plan gives you enough room, and when the API is cheaper.

Ways to pay for Claude Code

Option Price (US) How usage works Best for
Free plan$0No Claude CodeChat only
Pro$20 a month or $200 a yearShared pool with chat, reset every 5 hours, plus weekly limitsLearning, side projects, short daily sessions
Max 5x$100 a month5× Pro's allowance per sessionDaily coding that keeps hitting Pro's limit
Max 20x$200 a month20× Pro's allowance per sessionClaude Code running most of the working day
API (Claude Console)Pay per tokenNo plan limits; you pay for every tokenAutomation, CI pipelines, teams wanting per-person billing
Team and EnterprisePer seat; Enterprise is $20 a seat plus usage at API ratesPer-seat allowance with admin controlsCompanies

Prices exclude tax. In euro countries Anthropic's page shows Pro at €18 a month and Max from €90.

What Claude Code costs on the API

On the API you pay per million tokens, and the model you choose makes the biggest difference. These are Anthropic's standard US prices:

Model Input, per million tokens Output, per million tokens
Claude Fable 5.1$10$50
Claude Opus 5.5$4$20
Claude Sonnet 5.5$2$10
Claude Haiku 5.5 (prompts up to 100,000 tokens)$0.10$0.50

Claude Code reuses a lot of the same context between requests, and cached input is billed at a fraction of the normal rate, which keeps real costs lower than the table suggests. Anthropic's own figure for company deployments is about $13 per developer per active day, or $150 to $250 per developer per month, with 90% of users staying under $30 on an active day.

A subscription caps your monthly cost; the API charges for every token but has no plan limits.

Subscription or API: a worked example

Take a developer who codes with Claude Code on 15 days a month and matches Anthropic's average of $13 a day.

Option Monthly cost Catch
API15 × $13 = $195No limits, but the bill grows with every long session
Max 20x$200Fixed price; very heavy days can still hit a limit
Max 5x$100About half the API cost, if 5× Pro's allowance is enough
Pro$20Likely to hit the limit on most of those days

For one person coding most weekdays, a subscription is usually cheaper than the API, because the price is capped. The API makes more sense for automated jobs that run without you, for occasional use of a few dollars a month, or for a company that needs a bill per developer.

If you are on Pro and only run out now and then, Anthropic lets paid plans turn on usage credits, billed at API rates, so you can keep working past the limit without upgrading. Check them in Settings, then Usage, on claude.ai.

Do the Max API credits cover Claude Code?

No. Since October 2026, Max 5x includes $100 and Max 20x $200 of monthly API credits, but Anthropic says they cannot be spent on Claude Code or extra usage in the Claude apps. They work for the Claude API, the Agent SDK, Managed Agents and the Console Playground. Unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle.

How to use Claude Code with your subscription

  1. Subscribe to Pro or Max on claude.ai.
  2. Install Claude Code from Anthropic's Claude Code documentation; it runs in your terminal, in VS Code and in the desktop app.
  3. Run claude in your project folder and sign in with your Claude account when asked, or type /login. Choose your Claude subscription, not an API key, or you will be billed per token.
  4. Type /usage at any time to see how much of your session and weekly allowance is left.

Clearing between tasks and using Sonnet for everyday work make the biggest difference to how far your allowance goes.

Five ways to make your allowance last longer

  • Clear between tasks: /clear starts a fresh conversation. A long session resends its whole history with every request.
  • Use Sonnet for everyday coding: Anthropic recommends it for most tasks and keeps Opus for hard architecture problems. Switch with /model.
  • Lower the effort for simple jobs: /effort reduces thinking, which is billed as output.
  • Be specific: "add input validation to the login function in auth.ts" uses far less than "improve this codebase".
  • Turn off what you don't use: disable unused MCP servers with /mcp, and keep your CLAUDE.md file short.

Which plan should you pick?

Start on Pro if you are trying Claude Code or use it for an hour or two a day. Move to Max 5x when Pro's limit stops you on most working days. Choose Max 20x only if Claude Code is your main tool all day, or Max 5x still runs out. Use the API for automation, or if your company wants to pay per developer.
